Year 2
General competencies
Residents must demonstrate increasing knowledge, skills and attitudes in the six core competencies including patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and system-based practice. These competencies for child and adolescent psychiatry are outlined in the Evaluation Manual.
Knowledge
In year 2, the resident must build upon the knowledge gained in year 1. Additionally, the resident must demonstrate increasing knowledge in the following areas:
- The indications and contraindications for inpatient and residential care and the role of the psychiatrist within the treatment team in these settings
- The role and function of psychiatry consultants to community systems of care, within the setting of the mental health clinic and after inpatient hospitalization
- Medical and psychiatric administrative skills within the outpatient, inpatient, residential care, and community care settings
- The basic information presented in the second year didactics as outlined in the course goals and objectives. Additionally, residents are expected to pursue specific knowledge related to children and families they are caring for
- Principles of practices of managed care and health care delivery in the inpatient and outpatient setting
- Further development of a scholarly topic for presentation or further development of a research project for presentation to the section at the end of the year
- Methods of teaching medical students in the care of inpatient children and adolescents, of supervising PGY-3 residents on their child and adolescent outpatient cases, and of teaching staff and the community through the community clinic, school setting, or through media presentations.
- Forensic aspects of child and adolescent practice, including custody evaluations
Skills
In year 2 the resident must build upon the skills developed in Year 1 as above. In addition, the resident must demonstrate increasing skill in the following areas:
- Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan with the inpatient unit and in the residential school
- Ability to work well as a member of a multidisciplinary team on the inpatient unit and the residential school
- Ability to be a co-leader of the substance abuse group on the inpatient unit
- Ability to consult to community systems of care both from the inpatient unit and in the community setting
- Ability to teach medical students, supervise residents, and to teach within the schools, local agencies, or through the media
- Ability to function as an administrator in outpatient or inpatient care settings.
Attitudes
In year 2, the resident must build upon the attitudes in Year 1.
