Medical Student Education-Clerkship

Here at the Pritzker School of Medicine, students receive didactic and experiential training in psychiatry across all four years of their education. The primary goal of that training is to prepare new physicians across all fields of medicine to face the ubiquitous psychiatric illnesses that they will see in practice. During their preclinical training, the students learn about development, neuroscience and its relationship to behavior, and psychopathology. The heart of the learning experience occurs during the third year clinical rotation.  Students care for patients under faculty supervision at the University of Chicago on the consultation-liaison service, at Ingalls Hospital on the academic inpatient service, or at Evanston Northshore Hospital on the community inpatient service. Core goals for the rotation include assessment of patients, case formulation, and an enhanced understanding of psychiatric treatment. Students may complete electives during the fourth year for more intensive experiences in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. There are also opportunities to conduct research with faculty across the department for interested students.
