Required Activities
You will have inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room, and in some instances, psychiatric consultation-liaison experience. There will be opportunities for patient responsibility under supervision. Specific activities, including case write-ups and case presentations, will be outlined at the orientation session at each site. Students are assigned to outpatient clinics as indicated on individualized schedules. Students are expected to leave their inpatient or consultation-liaison activities at the assigned times in order to fulfill their outpatient responsibilities.
Sites
We utilize four different clinical sites for the bulk of the training of medical students during their psychiatry clerkship. These are the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics (UC), Ingalls Memorial Hospital (ING), and Northshore (ENH); at UC, there are 3 sites - 1) Adult Inpatient Psychiatry at Ingalls Hospital, 2) Adult Consult-Liason Psychiatry 3) Child and Adolescent Consult-Liason Psychiatry. Prior to each rotation, students are emailed to ask whether they have a preference for a particular site, and we accommodate as many requests as we can.
Absence monitoring policy
Students must report all absences from clerkship rotations outside of scheduled days off on the tracking system (details below). Truthful reporting of absences is a professionalism expectation for all students. The attendance data will be reviewed at the end of each clerkship by Clerkship Directors and administrators for discrepancies. Failure to report absences truthfully may lead to professionalism reports. Also Academic Progress Committee leaders will review this data longitudinally across clerkships. If there is a repeated pattern of absences (consistently missing/taking unscheduled days on each clerkship) this may lead to a meeting with a student to check-in regarding their progress and potential resources required.

Personal Issues
Some students experience particular discomfort on the psychiatry rotation because of current or past personal or family psychiatric illness on which the work with psychiatric patients focuses increased attention. Please let the clerkship director, Dr. Shivani Kumar, know so that we can help you navigate this experience.
